Talent development in education is an area of research and practice focused on how learners’ abilities and potential are recognized, supported, and developed over time.
Drawing on insights from gifted education, developmental psychology, the learning sciences, and research on motivation, creativity, and expertise, it views talent as developmental, shaped through the interaction of individual characteristics, experiences, opportunities, and environments.
Some questions at the heart of talent development include:
- How do we recognize potential when it does not yet look like high achievement?
- How do we know when a learner is ready for greater challenge—and what comes next after mastery?
- How do we create equitable opportunities for diverse learners to discover their strengths and continue developing them?
- How can families and schools work together to nurture developing strengths and interests while supporting motivation and well-being?
Many practices that support talent development are already part of everyday school life. From rich inquiry and authentic problem solving to preassessment and flexible grouping, student-led projects, competitions and performances, advanced coursework and acceleration, mentorships and internships, leadership experiences, and opportunities across STEM, the arts, humanities, athletics, and other domains. There is much to celebrate and learn from what educators and school communities are already doing.
Where do you see talent development coming to life in your context, and what possibilities are you excited to explore next?
